Get started with Ledger — Ledger.com/start

A friendly, secure walkthrough to set up your Ledger hardware wallet and protect your crypto. This guide covers everything from unboxing to daily best practices.

Why use a Ledger hardware wallet?

Ledger devices store your private keys offline — known as cold storage — which significantly reduces the risk of theft from hackers, phishing, and malware. Unlike exchanges and some hot wallets, only you control the cryptographic keys that authorize your transactions.

Before you start

Make sure you have a clean, private workspace, a stable computer or phone, and your Ledger device box. Do not share your recovery phrase with anyone, and avoid setting up your device on public or unsecured Wi‑Fi networks.

What you’ll need

  • Ledger device (Nano S Plus, Nano X, or similar)
  • USB cable or Bluetooth-capable phone for Nano X
  • Computer or mobile device with the latest Ledger Live app
  • A pen and the recovery sheet that came in the box

Step-by-step setup

1
Unbox and inspect

Open the package and confirm the box seal and tamper-evident stickers are intact. If anything looks altered, contact Ledger support immediately.

2
Power on and follow the on-device instructions

Connect your Ledger and choose to set up as new device. Create a PIN code that’s unique and not easily guessable. Keep this PIN private — it’s required to access your device.

3
Write down your recovery phrase

Your Ledger will show a 24‑word recovery phrase (sometimes 12 or 18 words depending on the model). Write these words in order on the provided recovery sheet and store it in a secure, offline location — not on a computer or phone.

4
Install Ledger Live

Download Ledger Live from the official Ledger website. Do not use third‑party download links. Open the app and follow the on‑screen instructions to pair and install apps (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.) on your device.

5
Receive a test transaction

Create an account inside Ledger Live, copy the receiving address from your device, and send a small test amount from another wallet or exchange. Confirm the amount on‑device before accepting to ensure the address matches.

Security best practices

Recovery phrase

Your recovery phrase is the only backup of your wallet. Store it in at least two geographically separated, secure locations if possible. Consider using a metal backup plate for fire and water resistance.

Software updates

Keep Ledger Live and your device firmware up to date. Updates often include important security fixes. Only install updates through Ledger Live and confirm update prompts on the device screen.

Be cautious with links and messages

Never enter your recovery phrase on websites, apps, or messages. Ledger will never ask for your recovery phrase. Treat unsolicited support messages or links as suspicious.

Troubleshooting

If your device is not recognized, try another USB cable or port and ensure Ledger Live is allowed to access the device. If you forget your PIN, you can reset the device and restore using your recovery phrase — but the phrase must be correct.
